Epic have shown off a new Unreal Engine 5 demo, called Valley of the Ancient, which builds on the Lumen in the land of the Nanite UE5 demo in several big ways.
UE5 is now available to the public, and the engine of course has the previous highlights such as Nanite (for geometry) and Nanite (for lighting and shadows) but also adds in TSR (Temporal Super Resolution) which improves epic claims will allow UE5 to run 'close to' 4k native quality at 1080P costs.
The PC requirements for running the demo suggest ideally a 12 core processor, an RX 5700 XT and 32GB of RAM to use the editor because of the all of the uncompressed data and so on being flung around.
Nanite - virtualized micro polygon geometry system. Can easily import from say zbrush, replacing mesh LODs entirely. Assets are all virtualized. Nanite can fling around millions and millions of triangles for objects. UE5 Nanite is very versatile and powerful and was demoed extensively already in the Lumen in the land of the nanite demo on the Playstation 5.
Lumen is a real time advanced lighting system, and quite frankly just as important as Nanite. It is a fully dynamic global illumination and reflections system, designed for the next generation consoles. The lighting engine in UE5 is very powerful, and while the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series consoles can handle ray tracing (along with modern PC graphics cards), it isn't always the answer.
