A longtime ago, before they were even known vaguely for developing Gears of War, Epic Megagames (as they were called) made a little multiplayer arena-based hit known as Unreal Tournament.

On PC, Unreal Tournament marked a new era of online gaming and pushed our old 3DFX chipsets to the max with the new Unreal engine at the same time. The following year Epic's, now famous, shooter is announced as a PS2 launch title and oh boy did it fail to live up to expectations.

Despite the Playstation 2 being a compeltely new console with state-of-the-art hardware and Unreal Tournament being based on a two-three year old game engine it should of been mandatory for the game to run smoothly without compromise on the console's spec. But smoothy is entirely the opposite of what was delivered.

Unreal Tournament on Playstation 2 is arguably one of the choppiest games you'll play on the console and the frame-rate can slide to as low as 15-10FPS when the action gets going. It is embarrasing. Worse still the game actually looks worse than it did on PC with washed out textures and dull colours. At the same time, Free Radical's Timesplitters was measuring highly detailed levels with the same game modes and bots at 60 frames per second.

As you can tell, I grudgingly dislike the Playstation 2 version of Unreal Tournament. But Unreal Tournament is still a very fun shooter never the less. It lacks the online play that made it so famous but actually the splitscreen replacement is solid compromise. Since it is so cheap now, it is probably worth buying. It is recommended you use a mouse and keyboard although even then.
