While playing Until Dawn with Kazooie earlier today, we noticed a menu loophole that allows you to skip the first cutscene of the game (the one explaining butterfly effect). However, I have no idea if this could be considered legit in a speed run.

A hypothetical run of Until Dawn that uses this skip first goes to Episode 1 via episode select to setup the glitch. This is because in Episode 1 you start straight off from normal gameplay instead of pre-rendered cutscenes, and not being in a pre-rendered cutscene is essential for doing the skip.

Then the runner enters menu and opens episode select again. Now you want to pick Prologue to start the run proper, but you need to do a very precise menu input while picking it. You have to close the menu (from Options) at the exact same time as you choose Prologue. You know you did it right if you see a flash of the bus stop from Episode 1 on the screen after the black-out. Also, when Prologue starts, it starts from gameplay instead of the normal intro, for some reason.

The idea of using episode select in a speed run may seem a bit iffy, but consider the following factors:

- Until Dawn runners typically start a new run from episode select anyway instead of choosing New Game.
- episode select is not used to skip ahead, it's just for setup of a glitch.
- I guess you'd time the setup since it's a part of the run, and therefore start timer when entering Episode 1.

The butterfly effect cutscene is around a minute long. Subtracting the setup time, this should still save something like 30 seconds, if runners want to use it. Yeah...

EDIT:

Doing this skip causes a few other side effects. Whenever you try to open R1-menu, you cannot see Beth there (and the screen about her character interactions doesn't exist).

Also, the game doesn't force you to do the first tutorial of the game (examining the paper) after having done this glitch, which saves an extra 15 seconds!
