Pretty humble beginnings for what would ultimately lead to the biggest MMORPG ever... :o

Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look back at the very first Warcraft, a real time strategy game put out by Blizzard Entertainment in 1994.

While Warcraft is a massive franchise today, its beginnings were pretty meagre, resulting in a game which was more or less a copy of Dune II with a handful of changes to the mechanics to support the fantasy setting. It wouldn't be until the sequel, Warcraft II, when the series would finally find its own footing and identity, taking what was originally done here and improving upon it in every way.

Additional Information and Corrections:

* If you want to grab a copy of the game on GOG, follow this link: https://www.gog.com/en/game/warcraft_orcs_and_humans/?pp=91dfde1d6e005e422f64a59776234f1f4c80b5e4

* Or if you'd prefer to grab it on Blizzard's site, head over here: https://us.shop.battle.net/en-us/product/warcraft-orcs-and-humans?p=1652738

* I've been told there actually do exist boxed shareware releases on CD, it's not just floppy disk releases! Also, there appears to be a later MacOS-only release as well, only differentiated on the box by having a very plain sticker indicating as such in the corner. Seems like there's a LOT more different releases of the game than may be apparent... :o

* One of the things I skipped on mentioning is how if you continue poking a unit with your mouse cursor they have some extra dialogue. The reason I skipped it is because every unit for a particular faction has the exact same dialogue so this really doesn't amount to much. Warcraft II gave every different unit its own voices and thus this bonus feature is much more extensive and entertaining there. :B
