Warhammer Vermintide 2 - E5-2689 v4 + RX 6700 XT - Thoughts about the CPU in the description
A test run of Warhammer Vermintide 2. A CPU intensive game showing how a E5-2689 v4 performs along with an RX 6700 XT on maxed out settings (except blood decal amount) and native 3840 x 1600 resolution. I am impressed with this CPU! It is the best Xeon that the X99 platform offers (taking core count and core clock into account) and the only better processor for gaming would be the i7 6950X for the X99 which has the same amount of cores, but can be overclocked to higher clocks. Considering that a stock E5-2666 v3 can handle an RTX 4080 in modern titles that make use of all the cores for a close to 60fps experience on high resolutions, I would say that this one would do even a better job compared to a modded version of the E5-2666 v3 as well (3.7 Ghz to 3.5 Ghz on all cores in favor for E5-2689 v4).
If you are thinking of buying a used processor, I would recommend the E5-2689 v4 over the i7 6950X since the former one has been used in workstations for around 3-4 years in its predetermined state whereas about the i7 you don't know how it was used in terms of overclocking and overvoltage and whether it is at its end of life. It's way less riskier to buy a used Xeon compared to a used consumer oriented i7 CPU. Plus, given the prices as of now, the Xeon is more than twice cheaper than the i7 (-120 USD vs -300 USD). Make sure that your motherboard supports the CPU before making a decision!
I also upgraded the RAM of this system to 4 sticks of 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX clocked 2133 Mhz. One thing I want to note is that the RAM is having compatibility issues with the other X99 motherboard I have which is ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming i7. It has no problems with Asus X99 A II, but I do not recommend it for the ASRock motherboard. When I tried it out there, whenever I attempted to wake the system from sleep, it halted at 6F code which is a RAM-related check and shut down after a brief moment.
I didn't realize before making the test that the GPU had reset its profile to default after I restarted the system. Otherwise I am using the specified undervolt settings below.
