Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman! (Nintendo/Hudson, 1994) [GameBoy]
In the early to mid 90's, there was no escaping Bomberman. The guy had games everywhere on several platforms, with little sign of slowing down. This was one such game.
At first it may have looked like a cheap cash-in on the popularity of both the Bomberman series, and a deliberate push for Nintendo's then-new character Wario, but this was far from some half-assed effort at another portable Bomberman title. The gameplay was simple yet sublime, with literally hours of fun to be had while blowing shit up without having yourself blasted away.
Eight worlds, each requiring a different approach. Five powerups to be acquired, each making your attempts at being the last bomber standing that little bit easier. And whoever did the music knew the GameBoy's sound capabilities inside-out, creating minute-long tunes that may well be stuck in your head for hours after switching the damn thing off.
Probably one of the most addictive GameBoy games I ever owned. And yes, it could also be incredibly frustrating. But it was always worth it.
