Sticking with the theme of Brits aboard, we go to the 1980s and to Gary Lineker. The crispman was the reigning World Cup golden boot holder and without the carrot of European Cup football at Everton owing to the Heysel disaster, Lineker took his talents to Catalonia and to Barcelona, scored a hat-trick in a Clasico, was supremely successful before returning to Tottenham in the early 90s.
