About this video: Hello everyone and welcome back to the Breakdown. Today, I’m going to be talking about all of the differences between Sponge, Forge, and Bukkit/Spigot servers. My goal with this video is to help you learn what type of server is going to be the best for you and your friends, so you can have the smoothest experience possible with start a Minecraft server of your very own! Nevertheless, let’s go ahead and get into all of the differences between Forge, Bukkit/Spigot, and Sponge servers.
Starting off, let’s talk about Forge servers. Forge is the number one modding platform for Minecraft. All of the best mods that Minecraft has ever seen from Tinker's Construct to World Edit to even Chisel have been Forge mods. The biggest thing that makes Forge servers unique is that Forge server can only have mods on them it can't have plugins or any other form of server/game modification.
Additionally, 99% of modpacks run on Forge servers, so if you have an FTB, SkyFactory, or even Technic server, it is hosted on #Forge. One thing worth mention is that Forge servers are meant to be smaller. You aren’t going to pack 100 players on to a Forge server. All players playing on a Forge server must also be running Forge and have the server’s mods installed.
From Forge, let’s talk about #Bukkit. Now, we aren’t just talking about Bukkit here. I’m going to throw Spigot and Paper servers in here as well. All of these servers use plugins instead of mods to add things to Minecraft. Now, this does add in some limitations, but these limitations allow Minecraft servers running Bukkit and its forks to be much more efficient. When you see hundreds of players on a single Minecraft server, they are running that server on some kind of Bukkit fork. Bukkit based servers are the best and really only way to scale servers over time. They are also the only way to create a BungeeCord network linking multiple Minecraft servers together.
Moving on, we have Sponge servers. Sponge is a community focused on bringing the best of a Forge server and a Bukkit server together. Now you still aren’t going to get performance as good as Bukkit based servers, but you can run Bukkit plugins and Forge mods together on the same server using Sponge. Now, plugins must be Sponge compatible, and not all plugins are. Some plugins won’t need any changes, but most will. Overall though, Sponge is the only way to run plugins and Forge mods together. On top that that, Sponge does optimize Forge server performance a lot letting more players on without lag. You can run a 30 player modded server with Sponge without many issues.
And there you have it! Those are all of the key differences between Sponge, Forge, and Bukkit servers in Minecraft. If you have any questions about these different server versions, please let us know in the comment section down below, and be sure to give this video a thumbs up if it did help you figure out which modded server was best for you. It really helps us out, and it means a ton to me. Thank you very much in advance!
