About this video: In this video, we are going to be talking about all of the different versions of Minecraft. One of the things that I think Mojang has done a pretty bad job at over the years in my opinion is give good information on what all of the Minecraft versions are and how you should choose the right one for you. This video is here to solve that. We will be talking about all of the primary versions of Minecraft today. No matter what console or system you play on, you will know which Minecraft version is perfect for you after this video.
The first Edition of Minecraft we are going to be talking about is the Minecraft Java Edition. This was the original version of Minecraft that came out in 2009. It is the primary version that Mojang, the original developers of Minecraft, works on, and it usually gets snapshots and test updates first.
This is the version that I and most YouTubers play on as well as where most of the super popular Minecraft servers, like Hypixel, are hosted with. You can also mod Minecraft Java Edition for free, after purchasing the game, and without any restriction. Every single Minecraft mod that has been super popular is for Java Edition. From Tinkers Construct to Just Enough Items to Shaders and Optifine, they are all Java Edition mods.
Java Edition doesn’t come without downsides though. You have to have a PC, laptop, or Mac to play Minecraft Java Edition, and while it can run on most computers, you will need a decent computer to be able to run any mods or play without a low render distance. Additionally, you can only play on Java Edition servers. You can’t play with players from other Editions of Minecraft like Bedrock or console versions.
The rest of the modern versions of Minecraft are the Bedrock edition. This version includes Minecraft on mobile devices like Android and iPhone, sometimes referred to as Pocket Edition, as well as console versions for Xbox One, PlayStation4. It also includes the Windows 10 Edition of Minecraft, which we will discuss more in a minute, and the Gear VR Edition and Fire TV Edition.
You will need to buy the Bedrock Edition separately from on every device you want to play it on. Account syncing between these device can be difficult, but it is becoming easier and easier due to Microsoft accounts. It is also much, much more difficult to install mods, play on servers, and host your own server on Bedrock Edition. Thus, if you want to mod Minecraft and run servers, Bedrock Edition isn’t for you.
The biggest upside to Bedrock Edition though is that it is much easier to play with your friends if you are on the same device. For example, console players can easily play with each other and mobile players can easily play with each other mobile players.
Last but not least, I want to talk about Minecraft Windows 10 Edition. While this is a spin-off of Bedrock, it gets confused with Java Edition frequently. Minecraft Windows 10 Edition has the same advantages and disadvantages as Bedrock Edition. It does, however, allow someone with a PC to play with Bedrock players. That can be an advantage if your friends are on Xbox but you are on PC. All in all though, I would recommend against buying Windows 10 Edition. Java Edition is much better.
And there you have it! That is our in-depth guide to all of the different versions of Minecraft.
