Understanding Internal & External Storage Options For PlayStation 5
Did you happen to get a new PlayStation 5 for Christmas and you're now looking for more storage? Well, my daughter's boyfriend has had a PS5 for a little more than a year now, but a family member gave him an external hard drive. He didn't understand why he couldn't store PS5 games to the drive. Well, I knew exactly why, so we're going to pass that information on to help you as well, that way you have an understanding between internal and external storage options for the PlayStation 5.
Internal Storage:
If you want to add storage, the best way to do so in my opinion is to pick up an M.2 SSD, or solid-state drive. Sony designed the PS5 to use common, off-the-shelf storage options, and that has helped keep prices considerably low, especially when compared to the proprietary Xbox Series X and Series S. You can get storage with just a few hundred megabytes, or get serious and get many terabytes of storage. I, myself, went and put a 1TB SSD in my PS5, and have loved having the extra space.
External Storage:
You can also use external hard drives or thumb drives in one of the Playstation 5's USB ports. These are a little less expensive than internal SSDs, but there are a number of limitations. Even though the PS5's USB ports are USB 3.0, they're still slower than the internal SSD port. That means loading, reading, and writing speeds will be slower. There's also a major drawback to external storage.
What Can You Save to Each
The internal PS5 storage, whether on the stock hard drive or on an SSD, can load and play anything on the PS5. From apps to PS4 or PS5 games, the internal storage can do it all. The external USB storage can ONLY be used to save and play Playstation 4 games! That's right, you cannot run PS5 games off the external storage at all! This was the limitation my daughter's boyfriend was running into, he couldn't load or play PS5 games from the external drive. Once he mentioned the drive was external and not internal it made total sense to me and I was able to figure it out.
