We Beat Our First Game Of 2025 On The Nintendo Switch OLED!
362024 was a rough year all around for me and my family. We had to reprioritize a lot of things, and as such, I didn't play or beat a ton of games in 2024. Well, as many people did with the way the dates fell, I took off from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day, and one of the things I did was I actually relaxed and played some games. My Wife got me a copy of Super Mario Bros Wonder for Christmas the previous year, but I hadn't played it a lot. Well, I put my head down and was determined to beat it while I was off. And what do you know, that's exactly what I did! That's right, we beat our first game of 2025 while playing on our Nintendo Switch OLED, and it was Super Mario Bros Wonder.
So what do I think of Super Mario Wonder? First and foremost I do love me some 2D Mario Games! Wonder definitely gave me flashbacks to like New Super Mario Bros on the DS and New Super Mario Bros Wii and Wii U. I love what they did graphically, it looks unique and fresh even on dated hardware. It is the perfect example that great gameplay will trump graphical power every time!
The power ups are fantastic in Mario Wonder, and they really make the game feel fresh and unique. Everyone knows about the Elephant power up, and it's so fun. But the Drill Hat and Bubble power ups are fantastic too. The best of all they really make each level they are used on feel different and special.
Going through the game, you do have different badges to collect and they unlock new abilities as you play. I didn't realize for a long time but you don't earn all the badges, some you have to buy using in-game collected coins! I'm not thrilled with this idea as it has too much of a loot crate feel for my liking, but thankfully you have to earn the coins in game and you can't just buy them.
Overall, I think Mario Wonder is a great addition to the franchise and I enjoyed playing it. I'm still going through levels to get more Wonder Seeds and unlock more badges. If you own a Switch, Switch OLED or Switch Lite I say this is a must own game! I hope they use this as a launching point as I'd love a Super Mario Wonder 2 on the Switch 2!
