13 Marc Mariani
When return specialist Marc Mariani was playing for the Tennessee Titans in 2012, he was on the receiving end of a brutal ankle break. In a preseason game, Mariani got tangled between two players only to have a teammate land on his ankle.
12 Ronnie Lott
Some of the plays Ronnie Lott made throughout the 80s and 90s are still talked about today. A rough and tumble kind of player, Lott wouldn’t only be known for his prowess on the field. An awkward collision during a game against the Dallas Cowboys, in the 1985 season, crushed his pinkie finger inward, towards his chest. The impact almost severed the digit.
11 Navarro Bowman
While playing for the 49ers in 2014, Navarro Bowman found himself in the center of a group of players, all tumbling to the ground. Bowman’s knee was bent the wrong way after an opposing player landed on his leg. If that would have been the end of it, the injury would have been more manageable. Unfortunately, while Bowman’s knee was hyperextended, other players came down on him, which pushed the fracture even further.
10 Jeff Fuller
On October 22, 1989, Jeff Fuller was playing for the 49ers in a game against the Patriots. Yet, for Fuller, things were about to get much worse. A helmet-to-helmet collision with an opposing player caught Fuller at an awkward angle.
9 Bo Jackson
There is no room for weak people in football and most players know that maintaining a high level of physical fitness plays a big role in staying safe on the field. Bo Jackson knew this as well. Aside from football, Jackson also played baseball so his body was adapted to a wide variety of movements. In January 1991, during a game against Cincinnati, Jackson would find out the limits of his own body. Jackson was often involved in vicious tackles but this time it was different.
8 Mike Utley
When you know the backstory, it isn’t hard to understand why Mike Utley’s iconic thumbs up has come to be associated with courage and perseverance in the NFL. In 1991, Utley was playing for the Detroit Lions in a game against the LA Rams.
7 Destry Wright
Starting a pro career is, for many players, the culmination of a lifelong dream. It’s their chance to prove themselves and reward the trust the team has placed in them. It can also be the launching pad to fame and riches. Unfortunately, some careers come to a screeching halt before ever taking off. A promising young running back, Destry Wright was about to start his pro career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. On July 30, 2000, a pre-season game against the Dallas Cowboys put an end to his NFL future. Wright’s ankle became entangled during a play and got twisted up badly.
6 Junior Seau
The linebacker was basically retired when he returned to play for the New England Patriots. In a 2006 game against the Chicago Bears, Seau went for a strong tackle. The pressure and momentum combined with the awkward angle bent Seau’s arm until it snapped.
5 Dennis Byrd
Such was the case of Dennis Byrd. While playing a game against the Kansas City Chiefs, on November 29, 1992, Byrd attempted to sack the opposing team’s quarterback. However, instead of running into him, Byrd collided with one of his own teammates and ducked his head while trying to avoid the hit.
4 Johnny Knox
In a 2011 game against the Seattle Seahawks, Johnny Knox was bent so badly, that his back touched his rear. It’s an angle that most human beings simply aren’t meant to be at. When Knox leapt to recover the fumble, he hit another player trying to do the same thing.
3 Joe Theismann
This is quite possibly the most famous football injury ever. On November 18, 1985, during a blitz, New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor pummeled the opposing team’s quarterback.
2 Kevin Everett
The Buffalo Bills tight end made what was supposed to be a routine block against Domenik Hixon from the Denver Broncos, in 2007. Right before impact, Everett lowered his head, which drove his helmet into Hixon’s shoulder pad.
1 Charles Tillman
These things usually take place during games, when the adrenaline is pumping, the fans are cheering and the stakes are high. So, when former Carolina Panther Charles Tillman posted a picture of his training on social media, people were confused. The caption on the photo reads ‘Just finished a set of push-ups…was I doing right?’ and it shows Tillman’s finger bent at a 90-degree angle from his ring finger.
