Why Mario is Italian [Advent Calendar #1]
Ever wondered why Mario of Super Mario Bros fame is Italian, instead of any other ethnicity? Ever wondered why Nintendo has built their entire Japanese gaming empire around European-American stereotypes? Well, now you can find out.
It turns out that Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, just really loves Italian comics, and enjoys pictures of big noses and large moustaches! It's just that simple!
This is day one of the Video Game Story Time Advent Calendar. For some reason we've committed to making a teeny tiny video for you every day in the run-up to the 25th of December.
Fingers crossed this goes well!
Merry Christmas, or whatever you're celebrating, or not! We're doing Christmas, so we'll wish you a happy one, but if that's not your jam, we wish you a happy time doing whatever you'll be doing this month. Even if it's nothing.
Lots of love,
