With the release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, now seems like an excellent moment to look at the history of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This game was released on two consoles: the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch, but it started life as a prototype that was designed to look and feel much like the iconic original Legend of Zelda for the NES.

I love stuff like this, I think it's the coolest thing. Retro-style prototypes for modern games? Yes please!

If you would like to see the prototype, watch this GDC talk, which provides much of the information in this video:

We're thinking of doing a review of Age of Calamity some time next week. 5-Year-Old Gamer technically shouldn't be playing it, as it really is a bit much for her in terms of violence (game ratings are there for a reason!) but she's been having an amazing time with it so far. We're just trying to actively steer her *away* from the actual gameplay, with...limited success.

I kind of hope she doesn't fall head over heels in love with the new Hyrule Warriors, to be honest. I don't want to have to pay eBay prices for the Four Champions' amiibos!

I think I might pick up the original Hyrule Warriors on Wii U for her at some point. I think she'd love this game even more if she could play as her favourites: Wind Waker Zelda and Medli.

Anyway, hope you're all doing well!

Lots of love,

PS: Yes, we know, it's not actually on NES. But the prototype is designed to look and feel like the NES. You get the point, right? You're not going to be needlessly pedantic, right?

Oh wait, this is YouTube. Needlessly pedantic is a requirement for entry.
