1998 was an incredible year for video games, with releases that revolutionized the medium with influences we still feel to this day. And the biggest reason that games from that year like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Banjo Kazooie, and so on, were able to create such an impact is that they took risks with their development. Rather than playing it safe to appeal to the masses, they chased their vision at full speed and built ideas that could have left players feeling abandoned, but instead led them to fall in love.

Nowadays the formula for how to make a video game with mass appeal is out there, and series' like Madden, Call of Duty, and the new Tomb Raider games follow it rather than taking risks and following in the footsteps of the icons before them. While there is nothing wrong with these games, there's nothing particularly right about them either, because they seek flawlessness over brilliance. And today, I want to talk about the distinction between those two ideas.
