Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Tips & tricks, Modifying the StartScreen, Startmenu,
The StartScreen is a wild beast. Don't worry it can be tamed to.
The Startmenu is a powerful tool to use, users were able to click the StartMenu button in the bottom left corner, Click all Programs, and let the tweaking and modifying begin. Users were able to right click and add new folders, Shortcuts, and move Shortcuts from one subfolder to another. On the flip side user were able to delete shortcuts and folders from the StartMenu and the changes were on the fly.
In Windows 8, All that easy tweaking of the StartMenu/StartScreen has change. Users are not able to directly change, add, or delete sub folders & shortcuts with in the StartScreen All program view. Don't worry I have the all that covered for you. Before you know it, that wild cat of StartScreen will be a tamed house feline in no time. So let's dig right in, I really do mean well have to dig as well. So I hope you know something about windows file structure.
Quick! Let's make some notes before breaking the system. Remember these 2 location and they do.
1) c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Startmenu\Programs. This Structure of the startmenu is used for EVERONE. Any tweaks or changes you make here, Everyone that has account on the pc will see them Via StartScreen, All Programs.
2) c:\users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\windows\startmenu\programs. This Structure of the startmenu is used only for that user. Any changes you make here will only show up to that user alone and is not SystemWide.
3) The user has to have "Show Hidden Files and Folders" turned on Via (Folder Options) go to the startscreen, type folder options. In the folder options click View tab, Have "show hidden files and folders" checked.
4) If UAC blocks you from editing the startmenu fold and file structure. Just turn UAC off in the User Control Panel. Or just go to StartScreen, Type UAC, It show should up in Setting on the far right side.
5 ****DO NOT DELETE STORE OR DESKTOP SHORTCUTS****** This will make accessing the Windows Store Impossible and will delete the Desktop Live Tile form the startscreen. You are able to move them from one folder to another with the startmenu Structure just do not Delete them.
Well now that we have taken a few notes on how window handles the startmenu and startscreen lets dig in and start (bad puns all ways intended) organizing it and modifying it.
