With the release of Windows 8.1 to the general public, we tested the upgrade. Before upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, you should have your login information available and your security contact information.

Windows 8.1 will ask you to login using your Microsoft ID, but you can use the local account if you want. If you use your Microsoft ID, you will also be asked to verify your installation using the alternate contact method, either a phone or an email where you can received a confirmation code. Of course, I used my phone number because I wanted to get it immediately with no possible delays.

The Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 upgrade went smoothly, with no issues at all. This is the 3rd system I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 from an earlier version. The laptop had Windows 8 Basic. A test system had 8 Pro RTM and a third business system had Windows 8 Basic Preview.

Each installed with no errors and saved both my regular Windows 7 applications and my Windows 8.1 Apps. All my user profiles and settings were intact. Windows 8.1 kept all my files and shortcuts exactly where they were, including the desktop, tiles, etc.
