Dragon Age Veilguard is an action RPG that is a huge departure from the previous instalments. It has abolished the ability to control members of your party, it has shortened your party by one member to now limit it to two, but it has also improved the combat to make it feel more fluid and satisfactory.
The best way to play DAV is by skipping a lot of the dialogue options. The story is boring and uninspired with way too many plot holes, and the dialogue is bland, unconvincing and simple. The problem is that this is also the WORST way to play an RPG.
Your dialogue options do not reflect the severity of the direction I want to go with my character towards. The strong stance options feel more of an enthusiastic suggestion most of the time. I just cannot be as much of an a-hole as I would like to be. What is the point of roleplaying if the role is going to be so drastically toned down?
Luckily it is not all grim. The combat is great. So great, in fact, that it has kept me hooked, giving me a reason to overlook such drag of a story to sit through. The spells are pretty, the mana system works well, and the variety of spells is also great. It is a big shame that I cannot have 10 spells readily available like I used to in Dragon Age 2. There are 3 basic spells and one ultimate spell you can equip at all times. There are 3 rune slots that upon activation provide you with temporary bonuses.
There is also a spell synergy which can combine 2 spells together, one from each character, in order to create a significant reaction to deal increased damage. A spectacle to the eyes.
The world design is fairly basic. There are multiple hub worlds that are primarily linear, with paths intertwining within one another. exploration is not difficult to carry out but also not very rewarding.
I really hope that the next Mass Effect will no follow the footsteps of Veilguard and give the player a more robust story, stronger dialogues and the freedom to roleplay the way that you want, with dialogue impacted in meaningful ways depending on the tone you set for your character.
