Woolfe - The Red Hood Diaries: Achievement - Quicker than GRIN
Woolfe - The Red Hood Diaries (PC/Steam)
Achievement: Quicker than GRIN
Description: Be quicker than the dev's and finish A Forest Adrift in less then 4 minutes and 56 seconds
So...A Forest Adrift is kind of a confusing level, and getting through it in less than 4:56 might seem like a bit of a daunting task. But it is possible, especially if you find a shortcut or two. =)
While trying to optimize my speed on this level, I actually discovered a very useful shortcut right after the "Thanks for the ride. You rock!" part... where instead of going up and around, you can actually just go straight left, and if you do your jumps properly (make sure you start with a sprinting jump), you can actually get around that wall-like group of floating boulders... and land on the platform behind it. Needless to say, this saves quite a bit of time!
So anyway, if you're having trouble with this achievement, this video will show you the path I took through the level (including the above-mentioned shortcut) to unlock the achievement. I don't know if the path I used is the quickest way through the level (it probably isn't), but it's definitely fast enough to beat 4:56. In fact, as you can see from this video, following this path, it's actually possible to complete A Forest Adrift in less than 4 minutes! =) Which means you won't have to have a perfect run to beat 4:56. Even if you make a few mistakes along the way, it should still be possible to earn the achievement (for example, I think during the run when I actually unlocked the achievement, Red fell to her death and respawned at least once... maybe twice). Good luck!
Some notes, extra info, and possible points of interest:
0:02 Right after you hear the sound of Red's breath, enter the "Skip" command (on an XB360 controller, hit the B button twice... and on the keyboard, I think it defaults to hitting Enter twice).
0:05 For pretty much the entire run, you'll want to be holding the "sprint" button down (RT on an XB360 controller, and defaults to Left Shift on the keyboard, I think).
0:28 FYI, if you haven't gotten the "Time for a break" achievement yet, the outhouse is to the left of the checkpoint basket here.
1:02 Since this is where you first learn the "whirlwind" attack, you'll have to use it at least once here (LB+A, or Left Control + Spacebar).
1:22 Make sure to trigger this checkpoint, so if you miss the jump on the upcoming shortcut, you can respawn here and try again without losing too much time.
1:25 After landing on the transport platform, enter the "Skip" command (B,B or Enter,Enter) to speed up the travel time.
1:30 Shortcut! It'll probably take some practice to get this right, but basically what you want to do is: start with a sprint, then jump left, and aim towards the wall, but just south of it so that you don't bump into it... then as you pass the wall, jump again, and aim towards the platform. If you do this right, you'll land on the platform and save a bunch of time, since you won't have to go all the way up and around. =) If you miss the platform, just try again from the last checkpoint (as mentioned previously, you should have enough time to beat 4:56, even if you fail a couple times here).
1:33 After you land on the platform, to avoid hitting your head on the spikes on the next jump, make sure to run off of the edge of the platform before jumping (this counts as a double-jump, but if you jump while still on the platform, you're fairly likely to hit your head on the spikes (and have to redo the shortcut again).
1:46 Just after the checkpoint, you don't have to wait for the rotating platform to turn safe-side up; you can actually just do a sprinting double-jump over it and safely land on the other side. =)
1:49 After landing safely, STOP SPRINTING. If you keep sprinting to the left, you'll bump into the spikes. Just run normally without holding the sprint button down, run off the edge of the platform, then air-jump onto the lower platform.
2:14 After getting onto the transport platform, I pushed the camera view to the left (right analog stick on the XB360 controller), to make it a little easier to see the next platform I want to jump to (you can still see the platform without doing this, so it's not necessary, but IMO it does make it a little easier to spot a little sooner). This is the only time during this run that I moved the camera view.
2:53 I fought the fairies here because I had to wait for the next transport platform to arrive.
3:21 Sometimes a fairy can follow you onto this platform. You can attack it if you want, or you can just ignore it. Just don't forget about double-jumping when the platform flips. =)
3:47 I didn't handle the previous part as quickly as I would've liked, so the log actually came a lot closer to Red than I'm used to here... but she did make it! =) Though it probably would've been safer just to let the log go though another cycle. =)
