Yellow Submarine Longplay (MSX Game)
- Yellow Submarine Longplay (MSX Game) -
Beyond the obvious reference (an elephant in the room), the game draws significant inspiration from the late 70s/early 80s naval and underwater shooters that enjoyed some popularity in arcades and on home PCs like the Commodore 64, the Commodore Vic-20 and the ZX Spectrum. The remarkable aspect is that Yellow Submarine not only pays homage but surpasses its predecessors.
Underwater, above water and airborne adversaries abound and you face threats from all directions. Submerged foes like black submarines, crabs, turtles, and fire geysers, towering battleships above water, and agile aircrafts in the sky; everyone wants a piece of your yellow submarine! Waiting for their attacks is not an option; you must not only skillfully navigate these hazards but also actively shoot them down.
To progress to the next level, you must eliminate a specific number of enemies, so expect a dynamic battle where swift reflexes and strategic shooting are paramount. Thankfully, the game sustains a brisk paceโneither too slow nor excessively fastโdelivering an engaging level of challenge that staves off monotony and never veers into frustration.
Initially, the sheer number of enemies might seem overwhelming, The key to survival lies in quickly maneuvering to the opposite side of the screen when enemies attempt to corner you. Since there are no time limits, there's no need to shoot them down rapidly or in groups. Developing good evasion skills and exercising patience are what will help you advance through numerous stages in the game.
Adding to its charm are basic yet pleasant graphics and lively colors - which never hurt. With that being said, Yellow Submarine emerges as an absolute hidden, addictive gem, earning my personal ranking as a noteworthy naval shooter from the 80s and one of the best ever.
