TL;DR Sonic Breaking Point has the coolness factor and nostalgia going for it, because this is as close to Super Mario Bros Z levels of hype as you can get. But the gameplay and especially the CPU AI needs tweaking.

Now to go into detail, I do think the gameplay mechanics are for the most part solid and well thought out... but the one mechanic that breaks everything and ruins the experience for me for what is an otherwise insanely hype fighting game is the "Rage Attack". What is that? Let me explain.

Rage attacks are basically your Counter/Combo Breaker. Hit the Rage attack button when an enemy attacks near close proximity, to break their attack with and unblockable attack of your own and even follow them up with a combo. Easy right? At least that's what I got from the in-game tutorial. Except on my end, it barely works outside said tutorial, while the CPU, regardless of the difficulty you select, can use it seemingly at will even when I'm not attacking. Sometimes literally boosting into your face then Rage attacking despite the fact that Rage attacks require the opponent to... you know... attack. But most of the time, the CPU punishes if you even so dare to drop a combo or trade and try to counter attack. The gameplay footage here is proof of how one sided this mechanic is in favor of the CPU. I could get being balanced to human players, but the CPU doesn't give a crap about that.

And the CPU, oh Dear Lord the CPU. Even on Intermediate, this is some of the most draconian bullshit input reading CPU I've ever seen in any fighting game I've ever played. Most of my fights, I got mollywopped badly. Oldschool KOF final bosses got nothing on this CPU AI. I played this demo for literal hours just trying to make sense on how this game and the CPU works. I barely scraped some wins and that is by employing cheese strats and abusing the "freefall free hits" you get. And even when I understood the mechanics better and learn how to combo, the cheap CPU will make sure all that hard work you did learning the game is a waste of time.

I still recommend you check out Sonic Breaking Point, just for the smooth sprite animations and coolness factor alone, but if the developer reads this, please rebalance your fangame, especially the Rage attacks. It ruins an otherwise cool concept for a Sonic fighting game.
