Zelda: Majora's Mask Playthrough #067, Ancient Castle of Ikana: Dancing ReDeads & a Wizrobe
This is video #067 in my Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask playthrough. When Link emerges from the northeast exit of the Beneath the Well dungeon, he winds up at the bottom of a well in the Ancient Castle of Ikana. Amazing music; it reminds me of the Hyrule Castle theme in A Link to the Past.
Before exploring this place extensively, be sure to have a Powder Keg on hand.
From the well, Link explores the exterior of the castle. There are Garos wandering around with tips of varying usefulness. One: another secret route can be used to reach Ikana Castle aside from the well entrance. Two: a Powder Keg is needed to explore the castle's secrets.
In the castle's entrance hall (time index 2:53), there are some ReDead doing a weird jig. As long as Link wears the Garo's Mask, the Captain's Hat, or the Gibdo mask, the ReDead will leave him alone. To open the north door, Link must shoot a frozen eye switch on the back of the northwest pillar with a Fire Arrow.
In the hall to the north (time index 3:24), there is a puzzling puzzle. A panel is lying on the floor. The top of the platform is hot. Link can raise the platform by hitting the crystal switch, but it will not stay up for long. It will not give him time to get to the switch on top of the pillar along the south wall of the passage. However, if Link becomes a Deku and burrows into a flower, the force of his ejection will pop the panel up again if it is on the floor. This gives him time to step on the switch and unlock the eastern door. Finally, he has to shoot a switch and raise the panel again to reach the door.
The room to the east (time index 4:27) has a bottomless gap. Link can ignore the southern ledge and the Skulltula above it. Instead, he should fly to the northwest ledge, where a switch unlocks the door leading forward. To the east, a couple of Skulltulas can be taken out with arrows. Then, if Link uses the Lens of Truth, he will see a hidden platform that will let him reach the central ledge. From there, he can jump east and then southeast to the door.
In the next room (time index 5:39), there are two Blue Bubbles. If they touch Link with their blue aura, they can curse him so that he cannot use his sword. Even worse, they don't stay dead. If Link gets cursed, the Song of Storms will wash the curse away.
The eastern exit leads upstairs to the northeast part of the roof (time index 6:19). A Garo here has a useful tip for dealing with the King of Ikana Castle. While navigating the ledges on the side of the castle, watch out for the Guay flying around.
Over the castle entrance, Link can jump down onto the overhang to find a Deku flower. Using this, he can fly to the southern pedestal across from him, where he can step on a switch that uncovers a hole in the roof. Nice! This will let light into the castle's southern hall.
The flower to the north will let Link return to the ledge above the entrance and from there to the narrow walkway along the roof. To the northeast (time index 12:08), there are a couple of pedestals with flames atop them. To extinguish the flames briefly, Link has to shoot the crystal switch on the northwest pedestal. Then, he can use the Deku flowers on the platforms to retrieve Piece of Heart #47. Shooting down the Guays is a wonderful idea, of course.
Returning to the ground level, Link reenters the castle's main hall (time index 14:58). To unbar the southern door, Link has to shoot the ice-covered switch on the southeast pillar with a Fire Arrow. In the room to the south, Link will face another irritating enemy from Ocarina of Time: the Floormaster. When he subdues this walking hand, it will split into three little hands. Reflecting light on them will make short work of them. Link can get rid of the sun block by reflecting light onto it. Past the dancing ReDeads, he takes the door.
In the room to the east (time index 16:01), Link will deal with another Wizrobe. Unlike its predecessors, this one shoots fireballs that split into several pieces when they hit the ground. However, Link can fight the Wizrobe in the same manner as before.
At the conclusion of the battle, Link should put on a scary mask again and go through the east door (time index 17:27). The hall beyond is home to more dancing ReDeads. After killing or ignoring them, Link can take the stairway to the southern part of the roof.
On the roof (time index 17:47), Link will find the ceiling hole that he opened up a short while ago. However, he should not jump through it. Instead, to the west and north, he will find a cracked spot in the roof. A Powder Keg will blast that crack open and let light into the castle's entrance hall.
Dropping into the entrance hall (time index 18:49), Link can reflect the refreshing sunlight onto the sun block to the east to make it disappear. Before following the east hall to the throne room, he exits the castle and returns to Ikana Canyon for a break.
