A playthrough of the DLC character Monster Hunter in the PC/Steam version of Capcom’s Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

A huge, huge thanks to user GodShin for the values for this game.

Monster Hunter is too pure for this world, and I adore her.

The best of the DLC characters, barring maybe Black Panther, Monster Hunter was a choice which didn’t entirely come out of nowhere, but was certainly appreciated. From what I recall, she was actually considered for UMvC3, but ultimately passed on in favour of other characters. Hailing from the series of the same name, she’s a generic protagonist who utilises many of the weapons from that series in her attacks, and is easily the most unique of the DLC characters in terms of her moveset, making her an absolute blast to play as. My only real gripe with her is that her magic combo (A, B, C, D) doesn’t flow dramatically well, and it’s only easier just to go for (C, D) and then the aerial combo, but it’s something you can get used to.

Monster Hunter is a series I literally haven’t played in over a decade. In some ways I love it to bits, but I find it too exhausting and repetitive to keep to. If “exhausting” seems like a strange descriptor to you, then let me elaborate. In the simplest terms I can think of, Monster Hunter is basically a boss-heavy version of Dark Souls. You have tons of different weapon types with their own unique movesets, a focus on boss monsters who have patterns for their attacks, you have various buffs you can apply before and during battle, items you can use against the boss monsters to aid you, and you also take huge amounts of damage and have a limited number of healing items for each encounter. Just like Dark Souls, you can take on bosses with multiple people, although teams are a more recommended part of the series, as opposed to Dark Souls where teaming up has its positives and its set-backs. You also gain materials from defeated monsters which you can then use to upgrade your weapons and armour. I would love the series were it not for one thing; the bosses don’t have lifebars. That’s it. If they did I would play the shit out of it, but the boss fights in Monster Hunter can be extremely long and not knowing how much health my opponent has left in an action title is really tedious, in the same way that I didn’t enjoy it in the God of War series either. It’s certainly a thrill to finally beat a boss-monster, but given that it’s the entirety of the game I always found it a bit tedious and lost interest in it after a while. When you can’t beat a boss in Dark Souls, there’s often other things you can go and do for a while. If you can’t beat a certain boss in Monster Hunter…well, that’s it. You’re stuck until you learn to git gud and get past him. Not bad game philosophy in the slightest, I might add, and one which the Souls series definitely took inspiration from, but one which I still don’t care for.

That said, I love that they included Monster Hunter here, as she makes for a more much interesting Capcom inclusion than most of the rest of the characters. She also has a very unique moveset, even if it is a little difficult to grasp at first, and on the whole she was pretty damn fun to use.
