In 2017, Capcom FINALLY released a port of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to Steam. After six bloody years. That said, I do appreciate that they did it, but their effort was somewhat wasted. You see, it seemed to be an attempt to get PC players hyped for the PC release of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite later that year and, oh boy, did that not end well for them. I didn’t think a Marvel vs Capcom game could actually die, and within only a few months too, but Capcom is good at pushing the boundaries of bullshit.
It’s important to link Infinite to UMvC3 in terms of bullshit practices however, because UMvC3 is just one of a long-list of them. You see, Capcom released two versions of MvC3. That doesn’t sound so bad, but you have to remember that they did that during the exact same year. The same exact year. It soured people’s opinion towards the franchise somewhat, especially given that MvC3 was a bit lacking to begin with. Releasing the big new game in the Marvel vs. franchise, only to then say “Hey, that isn’t the complete version” and release a definitive version later in the year was just a bullshit, dickish move, which eventually went on to bite them in the ass come the release of Infinite. Just like everything else.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 definitely feels derivative of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. You’ve got the three-button mechanics as before, although the general speed in the game feels a lot better than TvC was. You have endings, which…are absolutely awful compared to the great endings of TvC. Seriously, what the fuck happened? TvC had great endings, but these ones are just two panels of nothing. It’s better than Infinite, which had no endings at all, but that isn’t saying much.
I put off playing UMvC3 for years as a result of the stigma surrounding its release, and the general perception of it being a lesser game than MvC2, but I’ve got to say that it’s actually pretty damn good. I thought it was a shame to lose the 2D graphics (and still do – for the love of God, Capcom/SNK, learn from Ark System Works and look into doing the 2D style with 3D models they do), but the cel-shading actually works really damn well for a comics-based fighting game. The music is brilliant, the stage selection is awesome, and the game itself feels definitively in the same beginner-friendly vein that TvC had. Is that a bad thing? I wouldn’t say so, no. I’ve gotten to grips with both TvC, UMvC3 and even Infinite much better than I ever did with MvC1 or 2; there’s something about these systems which seems a little bit more grounded and pick up and play compared to the earlier two entries, and something about the combo to air-combo system feels a lot more natural than previous games, probably as a result of the changes made in TvC. This admittedly had the added effect of making the game quite unbalanced (just look up how Dante players play/used to play this game, it’s insane), but MvC2 had that problem too with Magneto, Cable, Storm and others, so I think that’s just a given when you try to play a casual fighting game in a more competitive manner.
Roster-wise, while vanilla MvC3 had a respectable but slightly underwhelming 36 characters (underwhelming compared to MvC2’s 56, anyhow), this game has 50 characters in total; 12 which were added in the ultimate version, and two (RE5 Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath) who were originally DLC-characters. Oh yeah, DLC characters right off the bat. You could tell this was a Capcom game. Luckily, said characters are included by default in the PC port, which is nice at the very least.
