REVIEW:
-There was an undeniable joy in seeing that LucasArts logo appear during the opening credits. I've always been a big fan, so to come across a yet unknown release was equally as exciting as it was surprising!
Right from that very 1st logo screen, the trademark in design through comedy instantly jumps out. It carries into the games early story elements too. While the framework does remain throughout, it's kind of a shame it peeks too early, with the vast majority of the stories presentation thereafter being rather bland. There's still a wealth of wacky ideas to enjoy but that high bar set at startup is never again quite matched!
Further creativity arises in adventure. The snes is overloaded with great RPGs, but not many that take place in space, and none offer anything close to the size of this games map! Once all 4 map upgrades have been obtained, the sheer size of the playable area is incredible!
Travelling the map requires movement between neighbouring planets by first destroying a defending space fleet (a mode that's essentially Asteroids), followed by descending to the planets surface to annihilate all Slug forces. Thankfully planet surfaces are very small, (often only 2 screens wide that loop indefinitely)
Combat isnt particularly exciting and is screaming for laser upgrades that never materialize. Item farming, planet exploration & even mission objectives, become far too repetitive resulting in gameplay feeling a chore at times. (especially when you spend half of it thinking you only have 2 Relays!) The incessant use of mazes, most of which appear very similar between dungeons doesnt help either!
A general sense of an intergalactic war is realised nicely even with it's very friendly presentation. Mission objectives, though time consuming are often straight forward & your inventory is the usual, wonderfully bizzare array you'd expect from LucasArts.
It feels harsh to slap a badge of mediocracy on this given it obvious production skill & investment, still for all its charm, it lacks alot that could have made it great. It's tempting to brandish the 'hidden gem' card, tho sometimes the 'hidden' aspect can muddy a gems actual lustre.
