REVIEW:
-A cool title I think we can all agree? But does it deliver? Well despite this being a very early release for the SNES in 92, Blazeon still manages to impress, with the rolecall of 'Bio-Cyborg' transformations really stealing the show.
Compared with some of the flashier and considerably faster shump options released for the system in coming years, Blazeon understandably fails to dazzle in looks, though it does enough to be stand out when compared with other, less adventurous shumps of the same release year, such as D-Force.
That said there's no escaping the fact this is a slow shump! Your ships treacle like movement can be tedious (especially in hazard avoidance), as can the long sections with little or no combat. Stages are far from short, many contain two levels within each, boasting sometimes multiple sub bosses. Though you're gifted 2 lives and infinite continues, with no checkpoints, a continue does mean beginning from start of the stage again every time. It's pretty painful, especially considering the difficulty of certain boss encounters.
Where the balance shifts and where most of the games satisfaction factor comes from, is the transformations! Certain enemies can be frozen with missiles then morphed into, mimicking certain capabilities. It would have been enough simply to have included 2 or 3 cyborgs options, but with a total of 6 very different morph available, each offering significant firepower & speed upgrades as well as a secondary special attack, it's fair to say there's more than enough variety to keep gameplay exciting throughout. It's also a neat inclusion that should you damage these enemies prior to freezing, then you adopt a damaged ship when morphed, I appreciate this kind of extra detail.
The 5 long stages do present considerably challenge, especially when handicapped by your stock ships sluggish movement. However, despite the frequent frustration, I did really enjoy this one. It's far from a system highlight but for those eager to discover a more leftfield shump selection, it's a very good place to start.
