REVIEW:
-The reality of chance based combat offered through traditional role play adventures is often a turn off to many gamers. Hefty storylines, usually cemented in medievil fantasy settings with heavy demands on navigating multiple menus and managing hours of grinding, take their toll on the inexperienced RPG gamer. The Snes offers a plethora of such experiences (many of which are some of the best the genre has ever seen), but it also offers a few surprises in the genre, and none come as refreshingly surprising as Shadowrun!
Based on the popular table top role play adventure of the same name, Shadowrun lovingly collects all those overused & clichèd staples of the RPG genre and gleefully murders them in front of their offspring! This is no friendly 'save the world', eco crusade! This is adult stuff. A dark & dingy story of murder and revenge. Even for the Snes, the moody tone of the storyline is still satisfyingly dark!
The futuristic cyberpunk setting creates a perfect background to this story which, while replacing the swords with guns, still has the confidence to hold onto genre staples such as magic as a form of attack. This blend of magic use and ferocious gunplay makes for a totally unique 16-bit RPG experience that is truly rewarding with the delivery of new spells and items, if you can find them!
Its fair to say that Shadowrun demands alot from its players, often requiring you to try every chat topic with every NPC. One insignificant addition to your chat options after one innocent conversation could be vital to progression hours later on! There's a fair share of crypic clues and 'where the fuck do I go now' moments, but the incredible charm the game oozes, does alot to balance any frustration.
You still need to level, you still need to grind and its true this is a far harder RPG than some, but for anyone looking for a totally new experience or something completely different? Look no further!
