-The very least you'd expect from a high price game is the courtesy to be a great. Syvalion certainly ticks the boxes for 'something different', seeing you pilot a giant robotic dragon; the Syvalion, through 5 tight stages of constantly spawning enemy chaos. While there's no argument with originality, gameplay suffers from being repetitive, unfairly designed, too short and extremely difficult. That is of course unless you take advantage of the infinite 'new coin' continues that spawn you almost exactly where you died!
While novel in design, the Syvalion's controls take a little adjusting too and even when comfortable, the constant requirement to turn away from the relentless onslaught of randomly spawning enemies that appear in front of you is a problem simply because of the length of dragons body. It takes a good second or two for the tail end to react after moving the head. Inevitably this results in the feeling of damage being taken unfairly. Things aren't helped by the speed at which Syvalion tears around nor the fact half the enemy forces are invulnerable to your weapons.
Navigating Syvalion through the many tight corners and avoiding already mentioned army of invincible enemies proves extremely tough given the Dragons length, especially by stage 5. The powerup system is extremely lacking in creativity also.
Bosses pose significant threat. The confined space combined with the sprite size renders taking damage almost unavoidable. Proving that beating this with only one continue must be an incredibly touch achievement given the amount of time required to memorise stages. Thankfully starting settings are all that's required for my challenge (as well as acquiring the top score which wasnt hard), so making full use of the infinite continues was fine with me.
Were this a £10-20 charity shop find, it would likely be a far more worthy addition, but given the games extreme rarity in the PAL region (only being released with ESP pak code), acquiring a copy will likely set you back four times that and for that price it just isnt worth the money. Even if you are brave enough to challenge a one continue playthrough!
