#132 TERRANIGMA - FULL PLAYTHROUGH (Part Two) - Beating My SNES Games
Here is part two of my Full playthrough of Terranigma done, as always using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states!Follow me on instagram @Cabin_game_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.REVIEW: (Posted originally on Instagram):-It's no mean feat to produce a hit game & even more so to continue that success into subsequent sequels. Sadly, not all were lucky enough to bask in the same glory others managed via better publicity and exposure, thus given birth to the 'hidden gem', that delicious filling to any retro gamer collection!Less 'hidden' nowadays but still very much gem; Quintet's 'Gaia' trilogy, built with two already excellent entries; Soul Blazer & Illusion of Time(Gaia), sees completion with a title never released in the US (likely due to its very late release in the systems lifespan). Terranigma not only effortlessly surpasses the best offerings Quintet have mustered prior but posses a genuine argument for best RPG the system has to offer period!Terranigma does begin by dishing out the same tired clichès of outlawed kid leaves village to save world, but more than few layers of genuine depth begin to peel away as the story unfolds. Emotion builds consistently with each new area unlocked. The duality of human evolution and its connection to the planet and animal inhabitants is addressed seriously. As is the fundamentals surrounding the actual concept of God and what it means to play him/her. All paths already trodden by Quintet in this series and other games such as Actraiser and Robotrek, yet its Inclusion in Terranigma builds real gravitas, truly elevating the story. The series's reliance on action over turn based play continues, tho a sense of slightly less hand holding with the RPG elements suggests Quintet trusted their audience more than previous entries.Though initially linear in design, as the world map opens and travel becomes more expansive, so do objectives & the correct path is not often all that clear (flower to the penguin anyone!).. What is impressive is developing towns & civilisation (should you do the right things) adding a sim building side quest to gameplay.
Combat falls Into the easier bracket for RPGs & long segments without dungeons or bosses does grow a little tiresome at times, but the strengths through great story, fun gameplay & real emotional depth does enough to confidently consider this one of the greatest RPGs of its time.
