"Going green" by purchasing a hybrid vehicle used to require sacrificing driving enjoyment or paying a higher price-sometimes both. BMW flips that formula with its new plug-in hybrid 5 Series sedan by offering it at the same price as the entry-level gas-powered 5 Series. The 530e's part-electric powertrain adds 500 pounds of weight, but also makes 184 lb-ft of torque available immediately. That enables the 530e to get up to 60 mph in the same 6 seconds as the 530i while using a traditional automatic rather than a hybrid-friendly but unfamiliar and unsatisfying continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Our reviewer found the 530e's extra torque enjoyable in all situations and calls the 530e's regenerative braking system much less grabby than others he's used. But like every BMW options list, the 530e's is long and dangerous and includes some things many believe should be standard in a luxury car.
