#255 SNK vs Capcom SVC Chaos Bosses (1/12): Goddess Athena playthrough
A playthrough of the secret boss Athena in SNK's SVC Chaos.

Athena is one of two hidden bosses, fought due to a number of pre-requisites. The other hidden boss, Red Arremer, is fought by the same requisites, except that one opponent must also be defeated by chip damage. Going to hell because you defeated an opponent by chip damage? That's a bit harsh if you ask me.
SNK vs Capcom is not a great game. It's difficult to describe why, but at its core it is unbalanced, awkward to play, and moves don't deal enough damage. This leads to awkward, uninteresting fights where you tend to win by time out, if at all. Also, one third of the cast of the game is hidden. One Third. In a crossover fighting game. While this is good for me as someone who covers bosses, it means a good deal of the game's characters are unavailable to most players unless they know a series of codes.
These 12 hidden characters end up as 2 hidden bosses, 2 final bosses, 2 sub-bosses and 6 mid-bosses.
Most of them are quite difficult to fight. However, the most difficult by far are the hidden bosses, which Athena of course is one of. She is brutal to try and defeat. For a start, almost all of her special moves are actually super moves, which deal great damage and give her temporary invulnerability. Despite this, she still has an exceed move for some reason. Her special moves as a result can be spammed to death against the player, and they can do very little about it. Some are even unblockable, and must be manually dodged. They also deal a substantial amount of damage, despite being usable at will. The player therefore has to time their attacks very well in order to take out Athena, and that's not an easy task. What's more, you only get one shot to fight her. If you lose, you have to try again from the beginning. Playing as her, Athena is quite boring as a result. She reminds me a little of a Mortal Kombat boss; fun to fight, but very boring to play as. She doesn't really have any combos, and you just have to spam her special moves to death to win. Not a very good boss, play-wise.
Goddess Athena is of course based on the character of the original SNK arcade game. All of her moves are references to that game in some way, which is nice, and the only particularly redeeming thing about this infamous boss.
