A playthrough of the playable version of the boss Serious Mr. Karate in SNK's SVC Chaos.

There are two versions of Mr. Karate and Shin Akuma in this game; a playable, toned down version usable by the player, and the boss version the player fights which has significantly more power. You'll see this in particular with the fight in this video between the player version and the boss version of Serious Mr. Karate. This playable version of him is horribly toned down, doing very little damage especially compared to his boss counterpart. When first playing as him, I was convinced something was wrong with my rom, but it wasn't.

I'm going to try accessing their boss versions in the future, but this will do for now. Anyway, the playable version of Serious Mr. Karate is honestly awful. He really isn't very powerful (many of his moves doing very little damage) and, like Shin Akuma, he can only make up for this by doing a series of combos, which are significantly for difficult and situational for him. He has all his classic moves, though also obtains a fireless ko'oh ken, as well as a triple Haoh Shokoh Ken. Though these can be useful moves, their limited power means they must be used many times over, and their use is pretty much always undone by the opponent landing a few good hits on the player and undoing most of what they've done. This game really is a shambles.

There isn't much else to say about him otherwise. He's a toned down boss, and like all toned down bosses it's really up to the player whether they bother to use them or not. I personally think he's not worth using though. It's fun to play as bosses because they usually give a different, and often more easy, experience to a fighting game. It misses the point when they're more frustrating to use than the regular characters of the game.
