3 Video Game Systems EXCEEDED My Expectations | Nintendo | TG16
We recently shared some of our biggest video game regrets, things we've bought that we had high hopes for that fell flat of our expectations. Well, sometimes a purchase can actually exceed your expectations, either by you having lowered expectations going in or by just being so good. To provide some balance with our "Biggest Regrets" short we recently posted, let's look at 3 video game systems that exceeded my expectations. And no, the Super NES isn't on this list because my expectations were so high, yet the Super Nintendo still met them.
The Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite & Switch OLED
Coming off the commercial flop that was the Wii U (more on that in a moment) I didn't expect much for the Nintendo Switch. I thought the hybrid setup looked like a gimmick, I didn't think selling a system that underpowered compared to the PS4 and Xbox ONE was a mistake, and the launch library wasn't that impressive. 7 years later the Nintendo Switch is in my top 3 Nintendo Systems of all time, behind only the SNES and original NES. The library is great, Nintendo proved once again that fun games trump graphical power, and the hardware revisions have been fantastic.
The Nintendo Wii U
I said this would be coming up soon, so here it is. The Wii U suffered from terrible naming and worse marketing, but this is a fantastic system. I only paid $60 for mine due to a misprinted ad that Walmart actually honored, and I love this system. The fact that so much of this system's library has been ported to the Switch should tell you how good it was! I still am not the biggest fan of the Gamepad controller, but if you play with Wii Remotes and Nunchucks or the Wii U Pro Controller you have an absolutely amazing system to play on.
The TurboGrafx16 & TurboGrafx16 Mini
These two systems are 2 of the best ever made, and I will fight people on that! I never had a TG16 growing up, and I never knew anyone who had one. The graphics and audio rival the Genesis and SNES, and it's actually closer to an 8-bit than 16-bit system! While collecting physical TG16 games is darn pricey now, I can see why with the excellent quality of games.
