A playthrough of the hidden boss and sub-boss Roger in the arcade version of Namco's Tekken 2.

Well, if you thought having a bear in the game was goofy, you haven't seen anything yet. Tekken 2 sees the only instance of a hidden boss in the series. By getting a great on stage 3 in arcade mode, you will be taken to a secret battle against either a boxing kangaroo, or a boxing dinosaur. Yes, it's one of those absolutely wonderful secrets that makes very little sense, but is incredibly endearing as a result.

Roger is fought in a remake of the Fiji stage from the first game, with a remixed backing track to boot. He's also fought as Kazuya's sub-boss, as we saw last video, but I can still only imagine the surprise arcade-goers must have felt back in the day as they accidentally came across Roger on Stage 4. What's more, it gives a bit of use to the "great" component, whereby the announcer will say "great" if you win a match with barely any health left. It's nice they bothered to work this into a function somehow, and particularly for a hidden boss of all things.

Roger's moveset are mainly a derivative of Armor King's, as after escaping Mishima Corp both he and his counterpart were taught how to fight by the masked wrestler. That said, they do still seem to have a few unique moves of their own, such as this move where they lie on the ground and repeatedly kick upwards, like something out of an old Looney Tunes cartoon. Furthermore, Roger also has his own sub-boss, Alex the dinosaur, who he shares his character slot with. Alex even has his own stage! Not that you'd end up seeing it very much of course. But then again, that's the point of these hidden secrets in an arcade game, to keep you coming back again and again. All in all, although mostly a derivative curiosity, I'd still say that Roger is a great addition to the game, and we'll see that all the more next video when I cover the character he shares his slot with, Alex.
