REVIEW:
-The Godfather of puzzle platforming and hair pulling gameplay makes yet another spike littered jump away from its home on the Apple 2, this time arriving on the Snes in supposedly a heavily modified format to the classic game. Nostalgia fans may take offence to these changes but given the plethora of other, more honest, system ports available, personally I think its neat to have a fresh spin on the aesthetic. Regardless of your standpoint, there can be no argument on the gameplay here.
Being Nintendo, of course the removal of blood stains and gore from spike pits was necessary (tho they appear to have missed stains on the stages with a red hue). Its a small but predictable sacrifice for a Nintendo port but hampers the enjoyment none.
This being the 2nd time I've beaten the game, the frustration factor was somewhat reduced. There's still plenty of suffering to endure through the trial & error and graveyard of deaths at the mercy of gameplay progression. Still with practice your awareness of the games dirtier tricks becomes heightened giving you an advantage later on.
At its core the hazardous platforming rarely evolves beyond jumping spiked pits and avoiding collapsing floor tiles, but the addition of many surpringly fun sword battles (ever so satisfying when you force an enemy over an edge to a spikey death), adds real drama to the game and the inclusion of many surprise story and gameplay elements throughout really elevates the action.
Continues are unsurprisingly infinite, BUT the decision to include a global time limit to beat the game within is a cruel twist! The 2 hour timer is even saved with your password. The key to success is to reset the stage with a password once you know how to beat it, that way saving on time lost to experimentation & deaths.
It's a fun game with the right degree of challenge. No wonder the gameplay became a blueprint for so many to follow (sadly not the sequel) Jaffar however... what an arsehole! Stick to Aladdin mate!
