Alfred Tries To Play: Smart Ball (SNES)
If there's one thing I've discovered, it's that blue balls are the unsung heroes of SNES platformers. I ain't being rude, but I say this because of the number of SNES platformers I've played where you literally control a blue ball. Games like Super Putty and the sequel Putty Squad, or Super Morph where one of the forms is a liquid blue ball. Or even Claymates, where your default form is a blue ball. If I'm being generous the weird Mr Potato Head/Smurf hybrid from Ka-Blooey might also count.
Add this game also to that list, but it's probably the weakest of the lot. It's a straightforward platformer that could have been so much better than it turned out being. This game's blue ball has unimpressive powers, like the stretch that doesn't really do anything. Perhaps his most important power is to throw red balls at enemies and bosses. Also, standing on enemies doesn't automatically kill them unless you press down to squish them while standing on them.
It's the kind of game I would have enjoyed more were it not for the poor and counter-intuitive controls and annoying level design. Not a terrible game, but there are much better platformers on SNES, even those with other blue balls. Smart idea, not so smart execution.
