Alfred Tries To Play: Welltris (Amiga)
6Welltris is actually an official Tetris sequel designed by Alexey Pajitnov himself. So why isn't this as well remembered as Tetris and in fact almost forgotten about?
Like Blockout (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjNlV0aot-E), this is a 3D take on Tetris with the action viewed from the top of the well. But the 2 games don't play identically. Blockout is kinda logical in how it plays like how you'd think a 3D Tetris game would play, whereas Welltris isn't as straightforward.
You have to move and rotate the pieces along the sides before they enter the well. The pieces will then fall to the opposite side of the screen or until they hit blocks already present. Unlike in Blockout where you must clear an entire layer, here you only need to clear a horiziontal or vertical line. If a piece cannot fully enter the well due to being blocked, the side it's stuck on becomes unusable for a while. If all 4 sides of the well are blocked, it's game over.
This is OK and plays better than Blockout, mainly because it never gets too difficult to see what's going on, but it's hardly gonna replace Tetris and is still a bit complex for it's own good. It requires a lot more thought and care, and doesn't remain as playable at higher speeds like Tetris. You'd be better off sticking with Tetris, but if you really want to play a 3D Tetris, I'd still recommend it over Blockout.
