CentOS as a group is a community of collaborators and open source users. Typical users of CentOS are organizations and individuals who do not need strong commercial support to achieve a successful operation.

CentOS is a 100% compatible rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements.

CentOS was for people who need enterprise-class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support.

Recently, when Red Hat announced that it will end the CentOS Linux 8 operating system series in late 2021, with a focus on CentOS Stream 8, several developers have started work on replacements for CentOS Linux.

One of them is AlmaLinux OS, developed by the creators of CloudLinux OS, a popular Linux distribution based on CentOS Linux and marketed to shared hosting providers.

AlmaLinux OS is an open-source, community-driven project that is built from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). AlmaLinux OS introduces support for Secure Boot. "You can read more about it by checking out the Release Notes. The biggest change you'll notice is that the #1 most requested feature, Secure Boot, is now fully supported in this release. Other changes include OpenSCAP support, the release of a devel repo and some new module streams and some compiler updates. You can also find a link to the upstream release notes there, which will provide you with a complete list of changes and updates to this release. Changelog: Secure Boot is now fully supported; OpenSCAP security profiles are now ready for production; the 'devel' repository released with extra packages and build dependencies not included in upstream distribution; the 'PowerTools' repository is now disabled by default to match upstream distribution and moved to separate file...

Following last week's release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4, various downstreams are beginning to release their respective updates based against the RHEL 8.4 changes.

Oracle has announced Oracle Linux 8 Update 4 for x86_64 and AArch64. This is Oracle's Linux distribution with the RHEL 8.4 source changes pulled in. Plus Oracle continues to offer their "Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel" as a newer Linux kernel build alternative to their Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) that tracks just the upstream RHEL kernel changes.

Separately, at the end of Q1 AlmaLinux saw its release as a 1:1 fork of RHEL and continuing in the spirit of former CentOS releases. AlmaLinux, which is backed by CloudLinux Inc, is now out with its RHEL 8.4 based update.

New module streams are also present in the new AlmaLinux OS release, including Python 3.9, SWIG 4.0, Subversion 1.14, Redis 6, PostgreSQL 13, and MariaDB 10.5, and various compiler toolsets were updated to new versions, including GCC 10, LLVM 11.0.0, Rust 1.49.0, and Go 1.15.7.

Other than that, this release of AlmaLinux OS comes with the “PowerTools” repository disabled by default in an attempt to match the upstream Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution. The repository has been moved to a separate file called almalinux-powertools.repo for those who want/need to use it.
