VzLinux - an enterprise distribution - has been used by Virtuozzo as a base OS for the company's OpenVz virtualization solution and other commercial products as well as a guest OS for more than 20 years. Web hosting service providers and other end customers deploying the technology gain the immediate benefits of a stable, long-term supported Linux distro maintained by the open-source community. VzLinux 8 is a free, multi-purpose distro optimized to run in containers, virtual machines or on bare-metal servers."

Company Virtuozzo (formerly Parallels division), which develops server virtualization software based on open source projects, the beginning of public distribution distribution VzLinux , which had previously been used as a base operating system developed by the virtualization platform and a variety of commercial products. From now on, VzLinux has become available to everyone and is positioned as a replacement for CentOS 8, ready for production deployments.
The release of VzLinux 8.3-7 is offered for download , built by rebuilding the source code of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.3 packages . The assemblies are prepared for the x86_64 architecture and are delivered in two versions - full (4.2G) and compact (1.5G). System images for OpenStack and Docker have been prepared separately. VzLinux is fully binary compatible with RHEL and can be used to transparently replace solutions based on RHEL 8 and CentOS 8.
It is emphasized that VzLinux is available without restrictions, is free and will henceforth be developed as an open source project, developed with the participation of the community. The distribution will be provided with a long maintenance cycle, corresponding to the release cycle of updates for RHEL 8.
The proposed installation image is designed to be installed on top of conventional hardware, but in the future it is planned to publish two additional editions optimized for use in containers and in virtual machines. At the same time, the current build already includes add-ons for efficient work under the control of Virtuozzo, OpenVZ and KVM hypervisors, as well as templates for deployment in cloud systems AWS, Azure and GCP.
For a quick transfer to VzLinux of existing solutions that use CentOS 8, a special utility is provided that supports the migration of both virtual machines and systems installed on bare hardware. Virtuozzo also provides additional functionality to provide snapshots to roll back changes in case of migration issues and automate server group transfers.
In the future, it is planned to provide a utility for migrating from CentOS 7, add an agent for Acronis backup systems and start shipping a Virtuozzo Linux Enterprise Edition build featuring commercial support and Live patches that allow you to update the kernel without rebooting. Next year it is planned to additionally release a commercial edition of the Hoster Edition for use in hosting systems.
