Altered Beast playthrough | Arcade
AKA Juuouki (JPN)
Review - I recently completed the Megadrive and PC-engine versions of Altered Beast and had to see how accurate they were from the original arcade. They are basically the same game, but with enough differences in level layout and enemy appearances, that you can’t use the same strategy for any game.
The hardest part of the arcade version is trying to get the white wolves to get the power ups. They appear on and off screen so much faster than the home console versions so often I had to get to the section of the stage before I would turn into a beast as opposed to the console versions where I would turn into a beast on the first section. Granted I memorized the appearance of the wolves for the console versions but I don’t think memorization would be as helpful in the arcade version due to them being so fast.
The levels are harder due to not being powered up for the majority and the last level is particularly brutal. The other versions had a chill last level relative to game standards, but this one really shows the player that the arcade is the boss.
The bosses are slightly harder than any other edition, and particularly the last boss which required extreme concentration. The formula to beat him is simple, (jump, dash, shoot, repeat) just like in the other versions but the timing has to be frame perfect so that any slight mistake can confuse your fingers and lead to death.
This is a good game, but I prefer the Megadrive version due to it being a bit more fair.
