Angels of Death is a Japanese horror game created using RPG Maker that recently got translated to English and put on Steam. The trailer just looked awesome, so I decided it would make a good gameplay showcase for this week’s New Release Friday. I will honestly probably be playing more of this on the channel, because I like it and want to show how the story unfolds some more. Also, you can catch the review portion of this NRF in the Part 2 segment that I will upload in a couple days. I know I said that I probably wouldn’t do this very often, but this game is pretty exceptional, so I will make an exception in order to show off more of it.

First off, what the fuck is NRF? New Release Friday is a series in which (hopefully) every week I will hop over to the “New Releases” section of Steam and pick-up a game to play for a few hours and give a first-thought review on. This series is an attempt to not only keep content fresh and relevant around the channel by covering current games in a concise and genuine fashion, but also to offer exposure to new games via a relaxed review format to inform potential, unsure buyers. Check out the playlist for more!

Angels of Death caught my eye because of the premise of the story mostly. It told me that there was a girl who just wanted to die and that she was traveling with a serial killer who would only agree to kill her if she helped him escape somewhere. She started with the same goal of escaping, once she realized where she was, but after learning that her parents were dead she had no will to live and requested that Zack (the serial killer) put her out of her misery. He thought this was fucking weird since he prefers to kill people who are scared or WANT to live and accordingly, refused to kill her. She managed to escape him when he actually wanted to kill her, but then he continued to chase after her and is now being hunted by his former co-workers.

The game comes with episodes 1, 2, 3, and 4. However, I am a fucking idiot and have no idea how to access the next episode, so until I figure that out I have to just put out the content I have so far. That being said, episode 1 took me like 2 hours to play through. A lot of the playtime will depend on how quickly you can read, which not only am I a somewhat slow reader but I am spending time to read it aloud and sorta kinda voice act it for the viewers. So you better appreciate it, little shits. Episode one’s gameplay had a kinda slow start in my mind, but it seems that each level sort of follows that trend. You first arrive on the level, have no idea what to expect, then things start to unveil themselves and creepy shit starts happening.

This being said, I think it actually did a lot for the pacing of the game. It gives you time to take in the atmosphere and to think about what has already happened. There seems to be something bigger at work here regarding how you got into the situation and what is happening. Also, from what I can tell, you come out of each level with a different bit of information and something else weird to consider in the grand scheme of things, so I appreciate that there is some downtime in which I can ponder some shit. As Rachel progresses, it is obvious that she has some inner quarrels going on and will need some serious time to figure them out herself, so it is only appropriate that the player gets the same.

Zack is fucking awesome. He resonates with me because of the way he acts and speaks. Now, he is a bit of an asshole and does some shitty stuff that I wouldn’t… you know, like being a serial killer. Aside from that though, his personality is great fun when paired against Rachel’s melancholy demeanor. He swears like a sailor, which makes me look like less of an asshole since I cuss as much if not more. So when I am reading his lines, it gives me a reason to be cussing other than me just having a colorful vocabulary. I do wish he didn’t murder our bird though… was actually hoping that it would be friends with Ray and she could find some sort of hope in taking it out of that shithole.

At this point, I kind of wonder if there are multiple endings that you can get or if there are any sort of other routes that I can take that I don’t know about. The game seems like it would have shit like this, just because the character depth is so solid and because it does give you prompts before doing everything. I think it would be great to have multiple endings and routes in this type of gameplay, mostly so I would have an excuse to play it again. Even if it doesn’t though, I am super stoked to continue on and see what else the game has to offer. I will likely do a more comprehensive review at the end of the playthrough (contingent on me actually doing a full playthrough of it.) For now though, I will just give my two cents in the next video.

Lemme know if more Angels of Death interests you. I think it makes for really interesting content, but that might just be because of me being the one playing it.
