This week on New Release Friday we are bringing you some hot memes and Detention 返校 Gameplay & Review. Detention is an atmospheric horror game focused on point-and-click elements, puzzle solving, and story building. Also, sorry I lied about the hot memes… there aren’t any. If you are into a hot heaping dose of Detention gameplay & review though then you have come to the right place. Let’s start off by clarifying, I don’t play all that much during this session because I was super tired and just wanted to go be a lazy asshole. However, the gameplay that I do get in will allow me to give you a half assed review and set the stage for the rest of the series, since I will be playing this on my channel. I don’t know why since it is already pretty oversaturated on YouTube and I am sure a lot of people would rather play it for themselves than watch it, but fuck it, here goes a solid waste of time. Hope you enjoy!

What the fuck is NRF? New Release Friday is a series in which (hopefully) every week I will hop over to the “New Releases” section of Steam and pick-up a game to play for a few hours and give a first-thought review on. This series is an attempt to not only keep content fresh and relevant around the channel by covering current games in a concise and genuine fashion, but also to offer exposure to new games via a relaxed review format to inform potential, unsure buyers. Check out the playlist for more!

Let’s start off with the Detention gameplay aspect for our review. How is the gameplay? Honestly, it is pretty bare bones but fits the game really well. I think that one of the biggest appeals of Detention 返校 is it’s atmosphere and I feel like any sort of overly complicated inventory systems, gameplay elements or the like would only distract and detract from the artful environments and atmospheric horror ambience. There is a necessary existence of an inventory system for the management of puzzle solving implements and note keeping, but it is very barebones and is hardly a gameplay element. There is no key to press to activate Detention’s inventory, all you do is move your mouse to the bottom of the screen and everything you need is right down there.

Meeting halfway between the atmosphere and the gameplay is the existence of enemies… if you could call them that. There are fuckers called the Lingered who are super creepy and super hungry. Detention introduces them by telling you to hold your breath and walk away. Upon review, I realized that I wasn’t actually supposed to walk away, but rather to just walk right on by. They are pretty testy and will not hesitate to attack you if you come close… or even if you don’t really. There seems to be no set rule on when they will or won’t attack, which is kind of annoying. However, Detention 返校 is a bit forgiving in this regard because even if the Lingered comes and smacks you, you can just sorta run the other way and they will back off and don’t seem to do any actual damage to you. My girl is probably infected or something now. Detention also gives you an ability to distract the Lingered by feeding them so that you may sneak by. The system seems a little clunky, but that was just one instance where I tried putting down some food and holding my breath and it just refused to let me hold my breath.

Let’s digress from the Detention 返校 gameplay a bit now and review the story some. The story doesn’t give you a whole lot to work with and doesn’t seem too concerned with making you care about what is going in. That being said, I am actually pretty interested in what is the spiel and I think that this person who asked us to meet them in the counselor’s office may help expand upon that for me. So, the story of Detention started with our dude, Wei, falling asleep in class and then Instructor Bai showing up. From what we have learned, Bai is a bit of an asshole and possibly a psychopath. Now, I may be talking out of my ass here but I feel like there is a chance that he is behind all of this terrible shit going on in Detention and that it might even be his way of punishing Wei for falling asleep. Of course, the gameplay doesn’t really give me a whole lot to go off of in this regard, but I also think there is a chance that it is all just a dream that Wei is having. Luckily I can just keep being distracted by the baller atmospheric horror being painted before me and just forget about the story until they give me some more to go off of.

Overall review, I would recommend Detention 返校 based solely upon the fact that it has so many positive reviews on Steam and just within the first hour I am pretty stoked on the state of the game. Everything seems very well crafted and the game uses its simplistic gameplay to an advantage by allowing you to focus on what it really does best. Additionally, the lack of gameplay aspects doesn’t cripple the game but suits the puzzle solving and point-and-click intent just fine.

Shoutout to https://www.youtube.com/MrCaptionSnuggle for the recommendation.
