A playthrough of Konami's 1994 puzzle-platformer for the Sega Genesis, Animaniacs.

Played through on the default difficulty setting.

A number of people have requested this game since I uploaded a playthrough of the SNES version a few months ago, so if you were one of them, here you are!

Animaniacs on the Genesis, based on the excellent (and sometimes surprisingly adult) 90s cartoon, is a completely different game from the SNES title of the same name. Oddly enough, it was also the basis for the Game Boy port. Go figure.

Whereas the SNES game was a 2.5D action game with a few puzzle elements, this one is a 2D platformer that plays like a puzzle game. As you come upon various obstacles and traps, you have to use each of the trio's unique abilities to get through. Yakko has a paddleball to stun some enemies and can push and pull crates, Wakko can use his giant mallet to smash blocks and switches, and Dot uses her assets to tease and distract male enemies. I can't decide if that is hilarious or demeaning. I have the sneaking suspicion that its a bit of both.

I'm not generally a fan of puzzle-platformers. Krusty's Fun House, Rocko's Modern Life and the like... no thanks for me, usually. I have to say, though, Konami created a rock solid game here. Despite how much I generally loathe this type of game, I've always found this one to be a lot of fun. The graphics look great - there are tons of small details and neat animation flourishes. Even though they look a bit washed out and grainy compared to the gorgeous SNES title, they still look absolutely fantastic. The music fares just as well. The controls are spot on (well, once you stop accidentally hitting the button to switch characters when you are trying to jump - I wasn't a fan of jump being mapped to B) and smooth, and that is certainly a good thing: this is quite a difficult game. Some of the puzzles will really make you think and experiment, and most of the bosses (especially the last one) aren't pushovers at all, even once you have the patterns down.

Overall, I'd have to say that the single thing that drew me to this game more than anything else, much like the cartoon, was its sense of humor. It's stupidly funny at certain spots, it's completely cheeky, and I loved how many allusions to different movies it throws in.

If you loved the show, or if you love puzzle games, you're not likely to regret spending good money to play this one - it's entirely worth the dirt cheap prices you can find it for on eBay.
