15Hey friends! Today's SMW ROM hack is Araiguma Mario World, made with love in Malaysia! It was submitted by Araiguma Kiruno, and it's a demo of a future hack-to-be.
This hack is pretty great, especially for an early demo. It has custom sprites drawn by Araiguma themselves which is something that always makes a hack stand out. There's nothing like drawing your own graphics to make sure your hack has something unique in it that no one else's has., and not a lot of people are skilled enough to do something like that. There's also some custom music, and the remainder is mostly vanilla.
The levels are surprisingly tricky -- I thought it'd be more of a romp and stomp, but it's actually more like an enemy gauntlet. Many of the levels are packed to the brim with enemies, so you really have to be careful when moving forward. You're bouncing off skĂśldpaddors while dodging fireballs with goombas raining down around you and lakitus swooping in while bombs explode off your feet... you really gotta be conscious of what's going on around you is the point I'm trying to make.
There are a few issues with the hack, but nothing too major. The main one I'd work on is the sprite limitation issue. You don't want invisible enemies hurting the player, or sprites not interacting or appearing correctly. This only happened in a few areas though. The other issues are mainly nitpicky things like Dragon Coins on screen borders or vertical scrolling being enabled in a Layer 2 water stage.
All in all, this was a fun hack with a great bit of personality that I enjoyed playing. Hopefully we will see a full version of this some day. Thanks for watching friends, and I hope you enjoyed the video!

Squiggy's ROM Hack Romp is a series on Super Mario World ROM Hacks. In this series, I will play through SMW ROM Hacks that are submitted to me and that I pull off smwcentral.net. I'll always play the submitted ones first though! Ideally, I will use no save states and do full commentary playthroughs.
I am also happy to accept ROM hacks for any other game, or even a game you programmed or somehow created outside of the ROM hacking world.
