đăCan You Get One Million Points In Five Minutes?ăăFlash Gamesă(Newgrounds Flash Game Playthrough)
Today we're switching it up with a Newgrounds flash game submitted by Maxxx Takeover. You might be surprised to see this, and so was I when it was submitted, hahah.
For all those that might not know, this channel is open to any type of viewer submissions when it comes to amateur game design. I'll play your Super Mario World ROM hacks, I'll play your Mega Man Maker levels, I'll play your flash games, I'll play your traditionally-programmed games, I'll play your Zelda Classic hack, I'll play a level you designed for Box Maker or Level Creator or Geometry Dash or Line Rider or VVVVVV or RPG Maker or anything else you can think of. If you created anything that translates into gameplay and I have the ability to record it (which excludes Mario Maker unfortunately), I will make a video on it for this channel.
What it comes down to is the fact that I really love amateur level design. It's probably my biggest hobby, with the only other hobby coming close being music creation, but I also like amateur music creation too so there you go. I get a lot of joy out of these unique gaming experiences that you are all so kind to share with me, and I love providing my take on a playthrough of viewer-submitted levels.
So, the long and the short of it is this: Send me your levels. Send me your games. Send me anything you want to see played by a YouTuber with a love for video games and too much time on his hands.
Now that I'm done ranting about how much I want to play your level, lets talk about "Can You Get One Million Points In Five Minutes?" by Maxxx Takeover. This is a Newgrounds flash game, which is a very old-fashioned sentence. It's described as a non-rhythm based music game similar to Undiscovered Colors, which I am not personally familiar with.
The basic gameplay involves moving your mouse around the screen, trying to collide with blue circles while avoiding red circles while listening to an evolving soundtrack. Each blue circle you collect will increase your multiplier and add some points, while red circles will reset your multiplier. The goal (as you might expect) is to get a million points in five minutes, which is the length the song plays. You can see how close you are to the end by the bar running along the soundwave.
The gameplay is pretty solid, and the penalty for hitting a red circle is harsh. If you hit even a single red circle you can pretty much kiss your chance at a million goodbye, as you're going to need to collect most of the blue circles without resetting your multiplier to get anywhere near that number. A single reset pretty much kills the run.
This gives the game a sort of "speedrunning tension" as I believe I described it in the video, where you know there is a lot riding on you doing everything perfectly. This kind of anxious rush is something I think I should hate, but that I really enjoy. It makes me angry and frustrated when I make a mistake because the time spent is more or less lost, but the reward for accomplishing it is so much better.
This game was tough at first and part of me thought it might be on the edge of "too tough" while playing, but looking back I think it was balanced pretty well. It took me the right amount of time to beat it, nothing was so insanely precise that it felt impossible, and anything that made it easier would have probably made the game too easy. It nailed that sweet spot of frustration/reward that makes a game fun for someone like me despite the fact that I'm losing a lot while playing it.
Thanks for stopping by friends! I hope you enjoyed our little trip to the wonderful world of Newgrounds.
