đâĄăLanguage Learning: Swedish - "KlĂ„upp-a-Chuck"ăăSquiggy's ROM Hack Rompă(SMW ROM Hack Commentary)
Today's Learn Swedish episode is only one level long, but it's a heck of a level! It's themed around the three special Swedish letters (Ă
, Ă, and Ă) and a bunch of words that include them. Each word has a small challenge or display attached to it, such as the word for "Beat Up" (which is KlĂ„upp) leading to a fight with a Chuck, or the word for "Robbery" (which is RĂ„n) leading to a bank-robbing scene.
I love things like this in hacks -- it's always fun to see someone apply their creativity in a theme like that. Robbing a little Super Mario World bank is something that doesn't come up in every hack, so it's moments like that which stick with me as a ROM hack player that's seen a lot of levels at this point.
Beyond that, the level design is actually pretty interesting... It's basically three miniature levels in one, with a clever system to make sure you play all parts. In this case, the parts are Ă
, Ă, and Ă, and when you complete any individual one of them you're given a number (written in blocks) before returning to the main hub level. Then you can complete the others, getting a second and third number, which you total up. Now you can pick the door number that matches the total of all your sublevel numbers to complete the stage!
This is a great idea, and allows you to put a lot of content in a single stage without it being too frustrating. I've said this before, but one of Super Mario World's greatest limitations (in my opinion) is the fact that there is only one checkpoint allowed per level. This means you really can't make giant levels without them becoming frustrating, because every time you die you'd have to rebeat a lot of content to get back to where you were. With this system, there's almost like a pseudo checkpoint after each little stage, as long as you remember the number you've gotten.
The only downside is that someone can just guess numbers at the end of the stage and clear it without doing anything, but I suspect not too many people will end up doing that. However, in the next episode, you'll see me take advantage of this a little bit... but you'll have to wait and see why it came to that, hahah.
All in all, this is another great level in a hack full of great levels, and I'm having a lot of fun playing some Mario and learning Swedish at the same time. You better believe the next time I see soap bubbles, my roommates are getting an earful of Swedish that they didn't ask for.
---[ Hack Information ]---------------
This hack doesn't have a SMWCentral.net page attached to it, and most of the information you need to know about it is in the title -- it's a hack for learning Swedish! One thing to note is that this is version 1.0 and further changes will most likely be made.
---[ Squiggy's ROM Hack Romp Series Information ]---------------
Squiggy's ROM Hack Romp is a series on Super Mario World ROM Hacks. In this series, I will play through SMW ROM Hacks that are submitted to me and that I pull off smwcentral.net. I'll always play the submitted ones first though! Ideally, I will use no save states and do full commentary playthroughs.
I am also happy to accept ROM hacks for any other game, or even a game you programmed or somehow created outside of the ROM hacking world. Basically I love amateur user-created gameplay of any type, and even if it isn't a ROM Hack Romp contender, I'd be happy to play anything you've made and put it in another series!
If you are a ROM hacker or enthusiast, let me know if there's anything you'd like me to play. Whether it be one you made yourself or one you'd just like to see, leave me a comment below or send it over to SendMeYourHacks@gmail.com and I'll be sure to get back to you. Thanks for watching friends!
