Today's hack is very special for a few reasons -- first, it's a SMW ROM hack that will teach you Swedish. Let me say that again: It's a ROM hack that will give you the real-world skill of learning the Swedish language. How crazy is that?

For that reason alone, this is one of the coolest hacks I've ever played. I've played a lot of Super Mario World in my life and I've enjoyed (mostly) every second of it, but it's not common that I come away with it with a practical improvement to the person I am. I may not need to speak Swedish very often, but you better believe I'm going to annoy my roommates by counting off my life total in Swedish when I'm playing Magic, or dropping the word "sköldpaddor" way more than is reasonably relevant.

Beyond that, Language Learning Swedish (or Learn Swedish as I originally knew it) is a very special hack to me personally, as it was one of the first ROM hacks I ever played on Squiggy's ROM Hack Romp. In fact, this was the very first ROM hack submitted to me by a viewer, rather than being a ROM hack I grabbed off SMWCentral.net to play back when the channel wasn't big enough to generate submissions yet. Akumie was one of the very first subscribers to this channel, I believe he was roughly #30 or so, and he was one of the first people to really support me and my videos. I'll always hold a special little place in my YouTube heart for him and the other early subscribers -- without them, who knows if I'd still even be making videos at all? I understand that creating something should ideally be altruistic and pure, but It's hard to find the motivation to record and edit for hours on end without someone to care about the things you're making, and people like Akumie got me through that rough beginning period of making content for no one.

So, enough of the sappy diatribe about my memories of ROM hacks past, I'll close it out with this summary: I'm really excited to learn some Swedish and play my favourite game while doing so, I'm happy to hear from my old friend Akumie again and see the progress he's made over the past two years, and I hope you all enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed making it.
