Army men RTS is a much better game than it has any right to be. Coming from the now infamous Army men franchise, a series that produce one passable game for every 3 Dumpster Fires, Army men RTS was one last attempt by 3D0 before they went under and got brought out. Despite releasing to lukewarm reviews, this game occupies a special place in my heart. After spending ages trying to get an emulated version working for the ps2, I gave up and discovered a PC version, which eliminates a lot of the problem typically associated with trying to play real time strategy game with a controller.
A far as RTS games go, it’s relatively simple. There are no upgrades to your units and only a relatively small roster of unit. Still, it’s simplicity leads to greatness. It’s very simple at a glance what each unit are strong and weak against. The low variety of units means it takes little time to figure out what units to use for each situation.
The biggest Complaint I have of the game is the lack of stances to the units. It seems as though unit are permanently in attack move stance. This is especially annoying in situation where you are tying to beat a hasty retreat and unit keep turning to engage the enemy.
Resource gathering and unit production I a lot slower here than in a lot of games. As a result, there is a bigger emphasis on using your units effectively rather than just rushing them with overwhelming numbers. Having squads of snipers, mortars and the like to move up and clear out defences bit by bit is far more effective than sending a large number of bodies to be melted down.
In order to get gold medals for each mission, you need to complete both optional objectives. This can be done on any difficulty unless one of the optional objectives specifically states that it must be done on hard. However, I did not feel this would be an authentic walkthrough unless everything was played through on hard.
