Asterix - Konami Arcade - Intro, attract and longplay [UHD 4K 60fps]
17Full playthrough / Walkthrough / longplay of the 1992 Konami arcade game, Asterix which is based on the French comic book series Astérix le Gaulois by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. The series started way back in 1959 and remains highly popular even today. While there have been plenty of Asterix games over the years, the Asterix arcade is one of the better video games Asterix has starred in. While the arcade game was very common in Europe on release owing to its French origins, it was far less common in other parts of the world.
The game uses Konami's tried and tested Turtles and Simpsons, scrolling beat'em up format with some added jumping gameplay. The pixel art is beautifully drawn and is designed to recreate Albert Uderzo art style. The comic book covers and cutscenes seen at the start of every mission are faithful recreation of art directly from the books. The game's stages each draw upon a different Asterix book and numerous characters from the series both good and bad appear in the game. On the visual front the game is spot on, this time around the game is only two players with Asterix and Obelix the only two playable characters. It's a bit disappointing some of the other gauls characters aren't available to be played as. Gameplay wise it's a good, not great game some of the same troop types are over used and the balancing isn't right one credit clear runs require using lots of cheese tactics. As by default throwing enemies leaves you vulnerable during the animation.
Certain enemies are over used in places and it's just not quite as fun, as some of the other Konami games in the genre. Still it's a good game and one that never got a deserved home port. The emulation on MAME still isn't quite right, with the scaling on the opening logo still a bit buggy, but largely it's pretty close to the original hardware now. Originally on MAME the game was badly unplayable in early build.
