Gunblade NY - Nintendo Wii - Arcade intro & playthrough Easy & Hard Route [UHD 4K 60fps]
25Full playthrough / walkthrough / longplay of both arcade routes from the Nintendo Wii port of Gunblade NY Special Air Assault Force. One of the many Sega Model 2 games that never got a Sega Saturn port, but it was rumoured at the time. With huge environments and dynamic fast paced movement, it may well have given the Sega Saturn some real trouble in handling a direct port, however.
Gunblade NY is an on rails shooter in the same vein as classic arcade games like Operation Wolf. At its origins this is little more than moving a cursor around a screen, but this is Sega in the 90s we are talking here and they make sure it good fun. There are eight stages in total, divided between two routes Free UN Headquarters and Liberate Manhattan. The goal is simply to take down the enemies that are causing chaos in New York City. As the Gunblade helicopter, zooms around the city, you have to shoot the enemies as fast as you can.
The dynamic nature is that the enemy troops run all over the place randomly and the camera zoom to follow then, as the enemies react to how and where you shoot them. No two runs are quite the same, making for a unique experience each time you play. While each of the two campaigns are only about 10 minutes long, you will find yourself shooting down helicopters, armoured personnel carrier, trucks and giant robots. It's a wild ride while it lasts, but the short length may have been another reason we didn't get a home version on the Saturn. Certainly the force feedback giant gun controllers seen in the arcade version added to the experience
Roll on 2010 and Gunblade NY got a release in a double back with it's sequel LA Machineguns on the Nintendo Wii. So how does this port fair, well it's pretty much arcade perfect. Ported by Sega of Japan, despite not getting a Japanese Wii release. This version adds in a number of changes, first off the game now supports widescreen, but it doesn't appear to be true 16:9 ratio and some parts of the game are still displayed in 4:3 ratio. Some sections like the credit roll also look stretched in 16:9 mode. The game now has added Wii speaker support for some sounds effects, but this can be turn off. In-game wise there are now a series of new weapons to unlock, that enable you to adjust you play style, these include a rapid fire shot, shogun spread and a canon shot that defeats most enemies in a single hit.
Gone are the real world arcade adverts for companies like Coca-Cola and FujiFilm. The huge Coca-Cola advert seen at the end of easy route stage one, is now replaced by an ad for Sonic and the Black Knight. Sadly due to real world events, the city skyline has had to be changed and an explosion seen at the start of the UN headquarters mission has also been removed.
On a technical front, the Model 2 hardware only did mesh effects in-game originally and for the Wii port these have now been turned to full transparencies. Unlike L.A. Machineguns which suffers from added slowdown on the Wii, Gunblade NY speed keeps up with the arcade original. Some minor edits in between the two runs to speed up the video length.
